“Portrait of the Dragon Queen”, DIN A4, pencil + gel pens (highlights)
I started working on this painting at a retreat in 2013. I wanted it to be a mixture of fantasy and art nouveau, with lots of details and the focus was really on making the girl’s hair as three-dimensional as possible. The features were very delicate, the shadows very uncertain and barely visible – I just didn’t dare to do that much back then. Six years later, I dug out the picture and wanted to complete it. With the experience I had gained, I emphasised the shadows on the face. It was no longer a delicate girl in the picture, it was a woman who looked more mature, more experienced, more courageous, more determined and more self-confident. I gave her some kind of warrior jewellery and continued to work on the details. A dragon was added. Six years ago, I wouldn’t have dared to design a dragon, let alone draw one. I’ve also added more pencil gauges to my choice of drawing tools (six years ago I was fine with HB, 3H and 3B) and I’m now finally using 8B and 5H. The white gel pen is now indispensable for me, as are 0.03 grit fineliners.
Who knows what the picture will look like in six years’ time, maybe I’ll keep drawing?
